Two-handed casting or Spey casting is a technique used in Fly fishing. This type of Fly Casting is normally accomplished with a rod referred to as a double-handed fly rod, often called a Spey rod. These rods can be from 10 to 16 ft long and offer certain advantages particularly for people that may have issues with the casting elbow or shoulder. Though the 2-handed rods can be used for standard overhead casting (similar to the single hand rod) they are traditionally used in a manner where the line is lifted from the water just long enough to position it prior to the forward cast, thus requiring less lifting of the hand or elbow.
Originally used mainly on European lakes and rivers, over the last 20 years or so, 2-handed rods have grown quite popular in North America. They were traditionally used in fishing larger rivers or lakes for bigger fish such as salmon, rainbow trout or Striped Bass. Onced used mainly to cast large flies, the shorter 2-handed rods (10 to 12 ft) are now commonly used for the smaller brook trout where casting space is not an issue. Once mastered, the two-handed technique allows for powerful casts and keeps most of the line in front of the angler.
If you are interested in learning this style of casting, we offer introductory lessons. These are private lessons (one on one). We will review the basics of two handed casting and help you learn some of the casts that will allow you to start fishing with this type of rod.
